RACE REPORT | F1 Austria 2025

Lando Norris won the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix after a dramatic race at the Red Bull Ring. Max Verstappen crashed out on the first lap, and McLaren took a strong 1–2 finish with Norris and Oscar Piastri.

The 2025 Austrian Grand Prix took place on June 29 at the Red Bull Ring. It was a race that started with surprises, action, and big moments. In the end, it was Lando Norris who took the win for McLaren, followed by his teammate Oscar Piastri. Overall, it was a perfect day for the McLaren team, as they finished 1–2 on the podium.

Before the race even began, there was trouble for Williams driver Carlos Sainz. His car had a problem and got stuck in first gear. Because of this technical problem, he couldn’t start the race, and the start was delayed by 10 minutes, leading to the formation lap needing to be restarted. Race officials shortened the race from 71 laps to 70.

As the lights went out and the race began, all eyes were on the fight into the first corner. But going into Turn 3, Max Verstappen was involved in a crash with rookie Kimi Antonelli. The crash forced both drivers to retire from the race immediately. Fans at the Red Bull Ring were disappointed that Verstappen retired. And as if this wasn’t a bad enough day for Williams already, with only one car starting. Alex Albon had to retire from the race a few laps after the start.

With Verstappen out, the McLaren drivers took control. Norris, who started from pole position, led most of the race. His teammate Piastri stayed closely behind him, and the two managed to pull away from the rest of the field. They both made clean pit stops and managed their tyres well. At one point, Piastri tried to catch Norris, but he couldn’t get close enough to pass.

Behind them, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were in a close battle for third place. Leclerc managed to stay ahead, even after the pit stops. Hamilton gave everything he had, but he had to settle for fourth in the end.

There were some small incidents during the race. Franco Colapinto spun after he made contact with Yuki Tsunoda, but he was able to continue. Pierre Gasly complained over the radio that his tyres had no grip and he was sliding in every corner. A few drivers made extra pit stops, but there were no other major accidents.

With 20 laps to go, the fight at the front became more intense. Piastri started to catch Norris. The two McLaren drivers were racing hard but fair. Piastri asked on the radio if he could try to overtake, but the team told him to be careful and not risk a crash. Yet that wasn’t enough, Norris had a small piece of damage on his front wing, which made the last laps more difficult for him. Still, he kept his cool and stayed ahead of his teammate. Piastri tried to push, but not too hard.

After 70 laps, the chequered flag came out and Lando Norris crossed the finish line in first. He raised his fist in joy. It was his third win of the season and a very strong performance. Piastri followed him just 2.7 seconds behind to make it a perfect day for McLaren. Leclerc finished third and rounded out the podium.
